Swedish massage

Long, slow strokes, one area at a time

The classic relaxation massage: warm oil, flowing strokes and a pace you set. It suits anyone who wants an hour to settle, and it is the session most first-timers choose.

Your therapist works the back, shoulders, arms, legs and feet in turn, or gives one area more time if you ask.

  • 45, 60 or 90 minutes

  • Unscented oil unless you ask for scent

  • Light to firm pressure, your choice

How the session goes

  1. 01

    Step 1: Talk first

A few minutes on pressure, areas to leave alone and anything you would rather skip.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Face down, covered

You lie under the sheet. The back, shoulders and neck come first, in long strokes.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Face up, covered

You turn over, still covered. Arms, legs and feet, then a slow finish at the neck.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Time to rise

A minute to lie still, then water and a chair if you like.

What to know before you come

  • Pressure

We ask before we start and check again partway through. Lighter or firmer is always your call.

  • Covered the whole time

A sheet covers you throughout. Only the part being worked on is uncovered, and it is covered again when we move on.

  • Ask first

If you are pregnant, or have had recent surgery or an injury, ask your doctor or midwife before you book.

  • What to wear

Come in what is easy to take off. Undress to your comfort; there is a hook by the door and a place for boots.

Who does it

Leanne takes most Swedish sessions

Soojin and Matthias do Swedish massage too, and you can book any of the three.

  • Leanne Johansson, with short gray hair and glasses, in a white top and navy trousers, leaning on a wall in the studio hallway

    Leanne Johansson

    Owner and massage therapist

Leanne opened Stillwater to make the room she wanted to lie down in: warm, quiet and unhurried. She trained in Swedish massage and in aromatherapy, and she has practiced for most of her working life. She works Tuesday to Saturday.

Questions about this session

Which length should I choose?

Sixty minutes suits most people and most first sessions. Choose 45 minutes for one part of you, and 90 when you want time to stay on one area and rest afterward.

Do I have to take my clothes off?

You undress to the point where you are comfortable, and you are covered by a sheet the whole time. Only the area being worked on is uncovered.

Can I talk during the session?

As much or as little as you like. Most people go quiet after the first few minutes, and your therapist follows your lead.
